Several years ago, in the closing pages of my otherwise humorous book titled The Dilbert Future , I told a weird little tale of how I used a technique called affirmations in my attempts to achieve a number of unlikely goals. Since then, I've received more questions on that topic than on anything else I've ever written.

The idea behind affirmations is that you simply write down your goals 15 times a day and somehow, as if by magic, coincidences start to build until you achieve your objective against all odds.

An affirmation is a simple sentence such as "I Scott Adams will become a syndicated cartoonist." (That's one I actually used.)

Prior to my Dilbert success, I used affirmations on a string of hugely unlikely goals that all materialized in ways that seemed miraculous. Some of the successes you can explain away by assuming I'm hugely talented and incredibly sexy, and therefore it is no surprise that I accomplished my goals despite seemingly long odds. I won't debate that interpretation because I like the way it sounds.

They discovered a link between a protein called PKM and recollections of disturbing incidents. By targeting the specific brain circuit which holds the tormenting memory they believe they could weaken it or wipe it out.

The incredible study paves the way for treatment for war veterans and victims of horrific attacks. It may also help drug addicts and people with long-term memory disorders such as Alzheimer's.

Handy Laundry Stain Treatment

I filled an empty hand soap dispenser with laundry detergent and put it in the bathroom. Naturally, I marked it so everyone knows it's detergent, not hand soap. Now when my preschooler undresses for a bath, I can hand scrub the stains out right away and watch her bathe at the same time. It also gets the stains out before they set in.

Deodorant Choices

As a female, I prefer unscented stick deodorant/antiperspirant because I don't like the scent to compete with my perfume. I have discovered that men's unscented stick deodorants/antiperspirants tend to be bigger and cheaper. As they have no scent, it doesn't matter. Now that I'm past the packaging, I am saving every day! Also, I have more options when using coupons.

Natural Weed Removal

I use a kettle of boiling water to kill the weeds that grow in the cracks of our sidewalk. I just pour it on the weeds (especially at the root) every day until they die. This works pretty good and is safe for kids and pets after treatment.

Quick School Lunches

My tip is to have a snack drawer ready to go! We pack a snack and lunch every day for school. To cut down on time and save money, I have a drawer that is dedicated to my packing. I buy large bags of snacks (pretzels, cheese balls, etc.) and repack in snack and sandwich size bags. I then add other things to the drawer (fruit roll-ups, dried fruit, etc.). Now, it is so quick and easy to pack lunches and snacks every morning.

It also comes in handy when my son wants a snack. He goes to the snack drawer, and it is already portioned out, which has helped with snacking and overeating. This is great for hubby and myself, too.

Septic Safety

This tip is in response to the tip about purchasing a home with a septic tank and having it pumped out by the sellers before closing the sale. With houses that used to be on a septic system and are no longer using the old tank, make sure it has been filled in so no one later falls in. The same goes for oil tanks that are in the ground and not used. Not all tanks (septic and oil) have been properly taken care of when taken out of use.

ICANN Security Glitch Raises More Concern Over New gTLDs

The historic decision from the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to open the top-level domain market has received a lot of criticism ever since its announcement last year. Recent developments, however, are bringing even more concerns to table about the stability of the program.

The application process for the new generic top-level domains (gTLDs), which was originally scheduled to end on April 12, has been put on hold indefinitely after a technical glitch was detected in ICANN's software system. What's more, the security issue also resulted in a data breach that allowed some applicants' information to be compromised.

The Association of National Advertisers (ANA) has raised issues about the program from the beginning claiming that it could be harmful to both consumers and brands. Dan Jaffe, the Group Executive Vice President of Government Relations at ANA, told us that ICANN needed to check the security of the system before the application process began.

ANA has asked that ICANN bring in a third party consultant to investigate the issues. It is also requesting that the Commerce Department press ICANN for answers and transparency before allowing it to move forward with its plan. Jaffe said he would like to see ICANN take steps that ensure these problems don't arise in the future as well.

At this point, ICANN is notifying the applicants that were compromised and is expected to re-open the application process once everyone is informed.

Can Penguins Fly?

Google's algorithm has had another update, code-named Penguin. Why? Google's Spamfuhrer, Matt Cutts, explains in a blog post. Ahhh! To improve quality. Needn't have bothered reading that, need we? It is what he always says.

What are the effects of Penguin on link-builders? Apparently:

1. Too much anchor-text optimisation will be discounted. If all of your inbound links have the anchor text, "real estate new york", then some of the link-juice will be discounted as unnatural.

2. Out-of-context links will be discounted. If you post on an SEO forum, but your sig-link says, "limo services chicago", then much of the link-juice will be discounted as unnatural.

Will this signal the demise of spam on this forum? Perhaps, in time.

Has anybody noticed their websites moving down in serps? (Mine have all stayed in place, or improved.)

Looks more like Google of yesteryear

When Google rose to popularity, ever so long ago, it was considered to be revolutionizing search. Think about what search was like back then. AltaVista, Yahoo, and a bunch of others were competing for your queries, but Google brought a different approach. PageRank was a huge part of that, and is often credited as the big differentiator, but another key element to what made Google stand out was its simplistic design.

Google still largely maintains its simplicity on its homepage (though it has a less simplistic homepage option in iGoogle), but in the search results it's another story. Search engines in the pre-Google days were essentially portals. Google, in its early days, was just fresh, clean search. These days, Google is much more portal-esque, with all of the company's various products that are not only available from links across the broader Google experience (the top navigation and whatnot), but also injected into the search results in various capacities.

Much of what Google has on its search results pages these days has been added at different times. It wasn't all overnight, but Bing's redesign really shines a spotlight on just how much more complex Google results are these days.

When Bing launched, we saw Google start doing various things that looked more like what Bing was doing. That's why it's interesting to see today that Bing has implemented some Bing changes that are more reminiscent of Google, or at least a past version of Google.

Here's what Bing's results look like now:

One of the big differentiators of Bing when it was first launched was the left panel of search options, which Google also adopted. Now, the two search engines have essentially reversed in design.

Of course some Google results are even more cluttered. Look at this one for "hotels":

And that's before the addition of the new paid inclusion style sponsored listings. You have the Google+ pages being promoted, the maps section, etc. It is very cluttered compared to Bing's version:

Bing's blog provides a nice before and after comparison of its new design:

"Over the past few months, we've run dozens of experiments to determine how you read our pages to deliver the link you're looking for," says Bing Principal Group Program Manager Sally Salas. "Based on that feedback, we've tuned the site to make the entire page easier to scan, removing unnecessary distractions, and making the overall experience more predictable and useful. This refreshed design helps you do more with search—and gives us a canvas for bringing future innovation to you."

"The new experience is more than skin-deep," says Salas. "You will also notice faster page-load times and improved relevance under the hood. After all, our goal is to help people spend less time searching and more time doing. And changing how we look is the next big step in doing just that."
